Transcranial magnetic stimulation, also known as TMS, has been providing relief to patients battling mental health or neurological conditions for years. Learn about the needs that led to the treatment’s development, the procedure itself and how it works, its eventual recognition by the FDA and more.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a medical device treatment used to treat a number of different mental health and neurological disorders. Its technological apparatus sends out an electromagnetic field with the ability to safely reach brain structures found to take part in the appearance of the targeted condition. By influencing these structures, TMS is able to safely regulate their neural activity, creating a more stable cadence to their activation, thereby facilitating symptom alleviation and contributing to the patient’s well-being.
TMS treatment typically involves a series of 10-to-20-minute sessions over a period of several weeks. As it is noninvasive, TMS does not necessitate the use of anesthesia, nor does it require a lengthy recovery period. Patients are normally able to drive themselves to and from treatment sessions, allowing them to incorporate TMS into their daily schedules.
TMS does not cause any significant, long-lasting, or adverse side effects. Its most common side effect being a localized headache at the site of activation, which typically passes on its own after the first few sessions.
What We
Offer
Major Depressive Disorder
A revolutionary depression treatment that has changed the field of mental healthcare, Deep TMS™ has been FDA-cleared to safely and effectively treat Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) through BrainsWay’s patented H-coil technology. Deep TMS treatment for depression works by utilizing a magnetic field that manages to directly reach wider and deeper brain regions, regulating the neural activity of brain structures related to major depressive disorder – specifically the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC).
Migraine
BrainsWay Deep TMS is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive, drug-free treatment for chronic migraine that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate brain regions associated with pain. It reduces the frequency and intensity of headaches, particularly for patients who have failed to find relief with traditional medications, often improving quality of life. Studies show that adding Deep TMS to existing care significantly reduces migraine pain intensity, frequency of attacks, and analgesic overuse. It is used as an "add-on" treatment for patients with chronic migraine who have not responded well to traditional treatments, including those with comorbid depression. Sessions are generally well-tolerated, with minimal, fleeting side effects like temporary scalp discomfort or headaches, avoiding the systemic side effects of medication.
Wellness
Modern life is busy. Your brain still deserves elite care. Our Brainsway Mental Wellness TMS Protocol is a flexible, premium neuromodulation program designed for patients who want meaningful mental wellness support—without daily clinic visits. This wellness-focused protocol may support: Brain fog & focus challenges, stress & mood regulation, sleep difficulties, long-COVID cognitive symptoms, anxiety symptom management,
decision-making & executive function, performance & focus enhancement.
OCD
Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or Deep TMS™, has been shown to safely and effectively alleviate the symptoms of OCD, particularly those patients who have not achieved sufficient improvement from traditional OCD treatment options. The treatment utilizes a magnetic field emitted by BrainsWay’s patented H7-coil to directly reach broader and deeper brain regions than its predecessors, regulating the neural activity of brain structures associated with OCD.
PTSD
BrainsWay’s treatment offers an effective, safe and non-invasive treatment that uses Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (Deep TMS™) to treat PTSD. The treatment performs magnetic stimulation of brain structures and networks related to PTSD and brings significant improvement to patients. It has many advantages over other treatment options, as it is an outpatient procedure and does not require hospitalization or anesthesia, is generally well tolerated and entails minimal systemic side effects.
Post Stroke
Brainsway Deep TMS is a non-invasive, outpatient treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate brain areas affected by stroke, aiding rehabilitation for motor function and aphasia. It acts as a neuromodulation technique to boost neuroplasticity, often helping patients regain movement or speech without anesthesia or significant systemic side effects. Studies show high-frequency Deep TMS over the right inferior frontal gyrus can improve language and naming performance in chronic post-stroke aphasia. Research also indicates that TMS, including Deep TMS, can improve arm paralysis, weakness, and lower limb motor functions.
